Overview

B.Tech in Artificial Intelligence (AI), sometimes named AI and Machine Learning or AI and Data Science, is a four-year engineering degree built on computer science. After the basics of programming, mathematics and statistics, you study how machines learn from data, recognise images and language, and make decisions. The exact name and syllabus differ by university, so read the curriculum and not only the title. Admission is through JEE Main and JoSAA/CSAB for central institutes, state entrance tests for state seats, or institute tests. This page explains how and what to compare.

Eligibility

Typical pattern. The official notice for the current year is final.

  • Class 12 (or an equivalent examination) from a recognised board, passed or appearing. Physics and Mathematics are needed, along with one more subject from the list in the current AICTE handbook.
  • The AICTE handbook sets a minimum aggregate in the required subjects, with a lower figure for reserved categories. Check the exact subjects and marks in the handbook for the year you apply, because the list can change.
  • Some states and institutions add their own conditions, such as a state domicile rule or a state entrance test in the Class 12 subjects. Read the notice of the state or institute you are applying to.
  • IITs, NITs, IIITs and other centrally funded institutes have their own minimum Class 12 conditions, set in the JoSAA/CSAB brochures. Candidates for IITs must also qualify in JEE Advanced and meet its rules on years and attempts.
  • Diploma holders and some B.Sc. graduates can enter the second year (lateral entry) in many universities. The rules are set by AICTE and by the university or state.

Entrance exams for this course

Entrance and counselling

  • Central route: take JEE Main (conducted by the National Testing Agency). Its rank is used by JoSAA for NITs, IIITs and other government-funded technical institutes (GFTIs), and by CSAB for later special rounds.
  • IITs: you must first qualify in JEE Main, then appear in JEE Advanced, whose rank is used by JoSAA for IIT seats. Both ranks are separate and the rules change each year, so read both bulletins.
  • JoSAA runs online counselling in several rounds: register, fill and lock choices of institute and branch, receive an allotment, and accept it by paying the seat acceptance fee shown on the portal.
  • State route: many states hold their own entrance test or use JEE Main for seats in state colleges, and run their own counselling. For example, Maharashtra uses MHT CET and a centralised admission process run through the State CET Cell.
  • Private and deemed universities may use their own entrance tests, JEE Main scores or Class 12 marks. Each publishes its own process. Check that the university and the programme are approved by UGC and AICTE.
  • Seats are filled by category (such as General, OBC, SC, ST, EWS) and by quotas such as home state, other states, women supernumerary seats and persons with disability, as in recent cycles.
  • Not every institute offers this branch under the same name. Compare the course content, as the same title can cover different subjects in different colleges.

Admission process

The usual journey, step by step. Dates and rules for the current year are on the official notice.

  1. 1Check eligibilityConfirm subjects, marks and age or attempt rules in the official notice of each route you want to use
  2. 2Appear for the examTake JEE Main or the state or institute entrance test relevant to the seats you want
  3. 3Register for counsellingCreate your account on the portal of the counselling authority (JoSAA, CSAB or your state) and pay the registration fee shown there
  4. 4Fill and lock choicesList institutes and branches in the order you prefer and lock the list before the deadline
  5. 5Seat allotmentA seat is allotted by rank, category, quota and your choice order. Seat-allotment rounds are published on the portal
  6. 6Accept and reportPay the seat acceptance fee, upload documents and report to the institute within the dates given

Documents

Is it for you?

A good fit if

  • You like mathematics, statistics and coding together.
  • You are curious about how data can be turned into decisions.
  • You are happy to read and experiment on your own.
  • You are interested in the ethical side of technology.

Think twice if

  • You want only the tools and not the mathematics behind them.
  • You think the AI name on the degree is enough without a strong computing base.
  • You have not checked whether the college has labs, faculty and projects in AI.
  • You want a field that will stay unchanged; AI tools change fast.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Choosing a branch only because it is trending
  • Ignoring college quality, faculty and placement evidence
  • Filling choices in the wrong order
  • Not understanding home-state quota rules
  • Picking freeze, float or slide without understanding the consequences
  • Skipping the reporting step after allotment

Frequently asked questions

Is B.Tech AI different from CSE?

It shares much of the core with CSE, such as programming and algorithms. It adds more courses on learning from data, statistics and applications. Compare the syllabus of each university to see the exact split.

Which entrance exam is needed?

JEE Main for central institutes through JoSAA/CSAB. State colleges may use JEE Main or a state test, and private universities may use their own. Check each notice.

Is AI available in IITs?

Some IITs offer AI-related programmes. The list of programmes changes, so check the JoSAA programme list for the year.

Do I need to know coding before joining?

No. The course starts from basics. Early practice with a language like Python is helpful.

Is a CSE seat better than an AI seat?

Neither is better in all cases. Compare the curriculum and what you want to learn. Many AI skills can also be built from CSE electives, and the reverse.

Can I do an M.Tech or MS later?

Yes. Many graduates study further in India or abroad. Admission rules for those courses are set by the institute concerned.

Does Padhaidekho guarantee admission?

No. Admission depends on the official counselling authority, your eligibility and merit. We guide you, verify information against official notices and keep you on track.
