Overview

Armenia is a small country in the South Caucasus. Some universities there offer a six-year medical programme in English to international students. Indian families should treat the NMC rules as the starting point: a minimum of 54 months of study, English medium, a 12-month internship in the same institution, and qualification in the licensing screening test on return. Before choosing, check that the programme and the institution meet each of these in writing. Read the Indian Embassy and MEA advisories for travel, and the NMC current notices for any change. We have kept country details general because rules change; please verify them from official sources.

Rules and regulations in Armenia

  • Universities set their own admission requirements. The state medical university states secondary education and entrance exams in two of Physics, Chemistry and Biology for foreign applicants, with a preparatory programme for those who need it.
  • The same university states that Indian applicants need NEET qualification. NMC also requires NEET for Indian students going abroad for a medical degree, so check the notice for your year.
  • Medical universities in Armenia state teaching in Armenian, Russian and English. Confirm in writing that your programme, including clinical years, is in English, and ask whether you will need Armenian or Russian with patients.
  • The national quality assurance body is the National Center for Professional Education Quality Assurance (ANQA), which keeps public registers of institutional and programme accreditation. Ask each university for its certificate and check the dates in the register.
  • Applications for foreign citizens at the state medical university are made through an online portal within published dates for each intake. Dates change every year, so read the university page for your year.
  • Visa and residence permit rules for students in Armenia are set by the Armenian authorities. We have not verified the details here, so ask the university and the Embassy of Armenia for the current process.
  • Rules on online classes, local registration of students and local licensing of foreign graduates in Armenia were not verified for this page. Ask the university in writing, and remember NMC rules on the course being completed fully in the same country.

After MBBS: the next steps

  • On return to India, a foreign medical graduate must pass the screening test required by NMC, which was called FMGE in recent years. Check the current NMC notice for the name and rules.
  • After the screening test, a compulsory supervised internship in India may be needed, depending on the NMC rules for your batch. Confirm in the current notice.
  • Registration with NMC or the State Medical Council follows, and it is needed before you can practise in India.
  • For postgraduate study in India, you appear for NEET PG as per the current rules of NBEMS and the counselling authorities.
  • We did not verify whether Armenia offers a residency or postgraduate route for foreign graduates. Ask the university about it in writing.
  • International exams such as USMLE (United States), PLAB (United Kingdom) and the AMC exams (Australia) are options some graduates look at. Their eligibility is decided by their own authorities, so check each one directly.
