Overview
China has many medical universities, and some run programmes for international students. We have not found a separate NMC rule for China in the notices we read, so the general FMGL Regulations apply: a minimum of 54 months of study, English medium, a 12-month internship in the same institution, and the screening test required by NMC. A frequent point of confusion is the medium of instruction, since the NMC requires English for the degree. Another is online classes, which the NMC allows for theory only, with practical and clinical training done in person. Check the Indian Embassy and MEA advisories and the current NMC notices.

Course duration
Universities in China describe the English-medium MBBS for international students as about five years of study followed by a one-year internship. NMC requires at least 54 months of instruction plus a 12-month internship in the same institution. Confirm the exact structure in writing.

- 6Study, internship and recordsKeep attendance, clinical posting and internship records in the same institution; no part may be done elsewhere
- 7Licensing path in IndiaAfter the degree, follow the NMC notices on the screening test or NExT, the Indian internship and state registration
Rules and regulations in China
- Each university sets its own admission requirements for international students, such as school marks, subjects, age and, for Indian students, NEET UG status. Ask for them in the admission letter.
- International students usually study on a student (X1) visa and then a residence permit. Rules and procedures change, so check with the Chinese Embassy and the university in the year you apply.
- The MBBS may be taught in English, but clinical interaction with patients is often in Chinese. Universities commonly ask international students to reach a set level of Chinese, for example an HSK test result, before clinical training or the internship. Ask for the exact requirement and what happens if it is not met.
- The Ministry of Education and the China Scholarship Council publish study-in-China information for international students. Read it with the university notices.
- Which body in China registers or licenses foreign students after graduation is a question to ask the university and the Embassy, since NMC expects graduates to be eligible to practise in the country of the degree.
- Check NMC notices on online classes: they have allowed online teaching for theory only, not for practical or clinical training. Confirm in writing how the university teaches each part.
- Check the World Directory of Medical Schools (https://www.wdoms.org) and the NMC notices for the year of admission before paying any deposit.
After MBBS: the next steps
- Back in India, a foreign medical graduate must pass the screening test required by NMC. Check its current name and rules on the NMC site.
- After that comes the compulsory supervised internship in India, if NMC asks for it, and then registration with NMC or a State Medical Council.
- For postgraduate study in India, you appear for NEET PG and take part in counselling like other candidates. Confirm the eligibility rules for foreign graduates.
- China has its own residency training for doctors licensed there. How far this is open to foreign graduates is something to check with the university and Chinese authorities.
- USMLE (United States), PLAB (United Kingdom) and AMC (Australia) are options some graduates look at. Each has its own eligibility rules, so check them with the body that runs the exam.
