Overview
In the Philippines, medical education is organised in two stages: a pre-medical bachelor of science (BS) degree, followed by a Doctor of Medicine (MD) degree. The NMC has issued public notices about how it treats the BS course for Indian students: it has said the BS and MD are separate degrees and that the BS course cannot be treated as equivalent to MBBS. The NMC has also set out limited arrangements for students who were already enrolled when the 2021 regulations came into force. Families must read the current NMC notices carefully, check the exact structure and dates for the programme they are considering, and obtain written clarity before committing.

Course duration
Universities describe a pre-medical BS (about two years) followed by a four-year MD. NMC needs at least 54 months of instruction plus a 12-month internship in the same institution, and has said the BS cannot be counted. Confirm the exact structure in writing.

Rules and regulations in Philippines
- Medical education is in two stages: a pre-medical Bachelor of Science (BS) degree, then the Doctor of Medicine (MD) degree. Universities set their own entry requirements for each stage.
- The NMC said in a public notice reported in 2022 that the BS and MD are separate degrees and the BS cannot be equated with MBBS. It allowed limited consideration for students admitted to the MD before the 2021 regulations. Read the current NMC notices, as we could not confirm later changes.
- Medical schools in the Philippines are overseen by the Commission on Higher Education (CHED). Licensing of doctors is handled by the Professional Regulation Commission (PRC). Ask what each requires of a foreign student.
- Teaching is in English. Daily life in the city may involve other local languages, so ask whether patient contact in clinical years needs one.
- Foreign students normally need a student visa and may need to register with the immigration authorities after arrival. Ask the university and the Philippine Embassy for the current procedure.
- NMC rules on online or distance teaching and on the internship being in the same institution apply to the whole programme. Ask for written confirmation of both.
- Check the World Directory of Medical Schools and the NMC notices for your admission year. Do not rely on a counsellor or agent for this.
After MBBS: the next steps
- Back in India, a foreign medical graduate must pass the screening test required by NMC. Confirm its current name and rules on the NMC site.
- After that comes a compulsory supervised internship in India, and then registration with the NMC or a State Medical Council.
- For postgraduate study in India, NEET PG applies, subject to the current NMC eligibility rules.
- The Philippines has its own licensing examination for doctors, set by the Professional Regulation Commission. Whether a foreign student may take it and practise there is for you to check with that body.
- Some graduates consider international exams such as USMLE, PLAB or AMC. Each is run by its own authority with its own conditions, so check them directly.

Frequently asked questions
What is the minimum course length under NMC rules?
The NMC FAQ states a minimum of 54 months of study, plus a 12-month internship in the same foreign institution.
Can the internship be done in India instead?
No. The NMC FAQ says the course and internship must be in the same foreign institution, and a separate supervised internship in India is also required for licensing.
Is a licensing test required in India?
Yes. The NMC requires the screening test, the National Exit Test or another test it mandates. Check the current name and pattern in NMC notices.
Does the NMC treat the Philippines BS course as MBBS?
In its public notices, the NMC has said the BS course in the Philippines cannot be treated as equivalent to MBBS. Read the latest notices for your case.
What if a student was already enrolled before 18 November 2021?
The NMC has issued notices with limited arrangements for such students, including an additional internship in some cases. Check the notice that matches your admission date.
Is there a time limit for finishing the course?
The NMC FAQ states the course must be completed within ten years from the date of joining.
Does this site promise admission or licensing?
No. We give guidance only; the decision rests with the university and the NMC.
Do you guarantee admission or licensing outcomes?
No. Admission is decided by the university and licensing by the relevant authority. We verify, explain and support; we do not promise outcomes.
