Overview

B.Tech in Cyber Security, sometimes named Computer Science with specialisation in Cyber Security or Information Security, is a four-year engineering degree about protecting computers, networks, software and data from attack and misuse. You learn computing and networking first, then cryptography, secure software, digital forensics and the laws that apply. It is offered by a limited number of universities, so check availability. Admission is through JEE Main and JoSAA/CSAB for central institutes, state tests for state seats, or institute tests. This page explains the route and the course in general terms.

Eligibility

Typical pattern. The official notice for the current year is final.

  • Class 12 (or an equivalent examination) from a recognised board, passed or appearing. Physics and Mathematics are needed, along with one more subject from the list in the current AICTE handbook.
  • The AICTE handbook sets a minimum aggregate in the required subjects, with a lower figure for reserved categories. Check the exact subjects and marks in the handbook for the year you apply, because the list can change.
  • Some states and institutions add their own conditions, such as a state domicile rule or a state entrance test in the Class 12 subjects. Read the notice of the state or institute you are applying to.
  • IITs, NITs, IIITs and other centrally funded institutes have their own minimum Class 12 conditions, set in the JoSAA/CSAB brochures. Candidates for IITs must also qualify in JEE Advanced and meet its rules on years and attempts.
  • Diploma holders and some B.Sc. graduates can enter the second year (lateral entry) in many universities. The rules are set by AICTE and by the university or state.

Entrance exams for this course

Entrance and counselling

  • Central route: take JEE Main (conducted by the National Testing Agency). Its rank is used by JoSAA for NITs, IIITs and other government-funded technical institutes (GFTIs), and by CSAB for later special rounds.
  • IITs: you must first qualify in JEE Main, then appear in JEE Advanced, whose rank is used by JoSAA for IIT seats. Both ranks are separate and the rules change each year, so read both bulletins.
  • JoSAA runs online counselling in several rounds: register, fill and lock choices of institute and branch, receive an allotment, and accept it by paying the seat acceptance fee shown on the portal.
  • State route: many states hold their own entrance test or use JEE Main for seats in state colleges, and run their own counselling. For example, Maharashtra uses MHT CET and a centralised admission process run through the State CET Cell.
  • Private and deemed universities may use their own entrance tests, JEE Main scores or Class 12 marks. Each publishes its own process. Check that the university and the programme are approved by UGC and AICTE.
  • Seats are filled by category (such as General, OBC, SC, ST, EWS) and by quotas such as home state, other states, women supernumerary seats and persons with disability, as in recent cycles.
  • Because this specialisation is offered by fewer institutes, check whether the programme is listed in the counselling brochure or whether it is a specialisation inside CSE, and what the degree certificate will say.

Frequently asked questions

Is this different from a normal CSE degree?

It shares the computing base. The later years focus on security topics. Some universities offer it only as a specialisation within CSE, so check how the degree will be named.

Which exam do I need?

JEE Main for central institutes through JoSAA/CSAB; state colleges may use a state test or JEE Main; private universities may have their own tests. Check each notice.

Do I need to know hacking before joining?

No. The course starts from programming and networks.

Are certifications needed?

Many professionals take industry certifications after gaining skills. They are separate from the degree, and each is run by its own organisation.

Is ethical hacking legal?

Testing is lawful only when you have clear permission from the owner of the system. The course teaches the legal and ethical limits.

Is it available in every state?

No. Check the counselling lists for the year and ask the college about its programme.

Does Padhaidekho guarantee admission?

No. Admission depends on the official counselling authority, your eligibility and merit. We guide you, verify information against official notices and keep you on track.

How Padhaidekho helps

We review your eligibility against the current official notice, build a ranked options list, keep your documents and deadlines on track and stay with you through every round. Fees and service scope are shared in writing before you enrol.
