Government, private or deemed medical college: how to compare

A fair framework to compare government, private and deemed medical colleges beyond the fee: quotas, bonds, clinical exposure and PG prospects.

Compare more than the fee

Fees matter, but they are one input. A good comparison also looks at how you will actually get the seat, what conditions come with it and what the college offers over five years.

Questions to ask for each option

  • Which counselling and which quota gives me this seat, and what is my realistic chance in that round?
  • Is there a service bond, seat-leaving penalty or security deposit?
  • What is the total cost over the whole course, including hostel, books and internship?
  • What is the clinical exposure: hospital size, patient load and postings?
  • Is the college recognised and are its recent results available from an official source?

Think about the next step too

Most doctors specialise. Consider how the college and its location fit your plan for postgraduation, and whether you may later want to practise in a particular state.

Keep a back-up plan

Counselling has several rounds. Planning options across government, private and, if suitable, abroad pathways in advance reduces last-minute panic.
