Overview

PGDM (Post Graduate Diploma in Management) is a management programme run by autonomous institutes, which design their own curriculum. It is a diploma, not a university degree, and is generally treated as equivalent to an MBA by employers, though equivalence for specific purposes such as some government posts or admission to doctoral study should be checked. The entrance route is the same set of tests as the MBA, followed by the institute's own written task, group discussion and interview. Check the institute's approval status on the regulator's site before you apply.

Eligibility

Typical pattern. The official notice for the current year is final.

  • A bachelor's degree of at least three years from a recognised university in any stream. The minimum marks, and relaxations for reserved categories, are set by the institute.
  • A valid score in an accepted test such as CAT, XAT, CMAT, MAT or GMAT, or the institute's own test. Check which tests the institute takes.
  • Final-year students can usually apply, subject to completing the degree with the required marks.
  • Some institutes prefer work experience. Others admit fresh graduates.
  • Age limits, if any, and required documents are in the institute's admission notice.

Entrance and counselling

  • Each institute runs its own admission process. There is no single national counselling for PGDM.
  • The entrance tests are the same as for the MBA: CAT, XAT, CMAT, MAT and sometimes GMAT or institute tests. Read the current notice of each exam.
  • XLRI, which runs XAT, offers PGDM programmes admitted through XAT scores, according to its published information.
  • Shortlisted candidates are usually called for a written ability test, a group discussion and a personal interview.
  • Academic record, work experience and diversity of profile are weighed differently at different institutes.
  • Reservation rules and any management quota depend on the institute and state. Ask for them in writing.
  • Check the institute's approval by the regulator for the programme, and ask what equivalence, if any, is recognised for your intended purpose.
