Overview

MD (Doctor of Medicine) and MS (Master of Surgery) are the postgraduate specialisation degrees for doctors who have finished MBBS. MD covers medicine-based branches such as General Medicine, Paediatrics, Radiology and Anaesthesia. MS covers surgery-based branches such as General Surgery, Orthopaedics and Obstetrics and Gynaecology. Most seats are filled through NEET PG, conducted by the National Board of Examinations in Medical Sciences (NBEMS), followed by counselling. The speciality you get depends on your performance, the seats available and your choices, so planning matters.

Entrance exams for this course

Entrance and counselling

  • NEET PG is a single national entrance test run by NBEMS. It is the basis for most MD, MS and PG Diploma seats in India.
  • The Medical Counselling Committee (MCC) runs central counselling for the all-India quota seats, deemed universities and central institutions. States run their own counselling for the state quota seats.
  • Some institutions hold their own entrance or selection. Check the notice of the specific institute.
  • You pick from one list of branches: clinical (such as Medicine, Surgery), para-clinical (such as Pathology, Pharmacology) and non-clinical (such as Anatomy, Physiology). Your interest and long-term plan should guide the choice.
  • Seats are allotted by merit in the exam, your category, your choices and the seats available in each round. Reservation and domicile rules differ between central and state counselling.
  • Government and some state seats may carry a service bond or a seat-leaving penalty. The exact rule is set by the state or institute and changes. Read the bond terms in the counselling brochure before you lock a choice.
  • In-service candidates, who are government doctors, may have a separate quota with its own eligibility and service conditions. Check the rules of your state or employer.
  • The number of rounds, the rules for exit and re-entry, and the dates are published by MCC and the state authorities each year.

  • You can stay committed to three more years of demanding work after MBBS.
  • You have a clear interest in a branch, not only in the title.
  • You are comfortable with long duty hours and exam pressure.
  • You are willing to travel or relocate for the right seat.

Think twice if

  • You are choosing a branch only because of a family or peer suggestion.
  • You have not read the bond and quota rules of the seats you plan to choose.
  • You expect to pick your preferred branch and college without any trade-off; seats are limited.
  • You may not be able to manage the time and effort of repeated attempts.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Locking choices without checking fees, bond and quota conditions
  • Missing a reporting or registration deadline
  • Ignoring state domicile and category rules
  • Not keeping attested copies and a spare document set ready
  • Trusting rumours or social media instead of the official notice
  • Paying anyone for a "guaranteed seat"

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between MD and MS?

MD is for medicine-based branches. MS is for surgery-based branches. Both are postgraduate specialisation degrees of the same level.

Is NEET PG the only route?

It is the main route for most seats. A few institutes may use their own tests. Check the notice of the institute.

How long is the course?

In recent regulations it is three years of residency. Confirm in the current NMC notice.

What are clinical and non-clinical branches?

Clinical branches deal with patients directly. Non-clinical branches such as Anatomy or Physiology are laboratory and teaching based. Both are valid; the work, hours and long-term path are different.

What is a service bond?

A condition where you agree to serve in a government facility for a period or pay a penalty if you leave. It varies by state and institute. Read the terms before choosing.

Can I leave a seat after joining?

Yes, but exit rules and penalties apply and differ by seat type and round. Read the counselling brochure first.

Can I choose any branch after a low result?

Your options depend on seat availability in each round. We help you compare realistic choices, but we cannot promise any seat.

Does Padhaidekho guarantee admission?

No. Admission depends on the official counselling authority, your eligibility and merit. We guide you, verify information against official notices and keep you on track.
