The short answer
- MBA: a master's degree awarded by a university or a university-affiliated institute.
- PGDM: a post-graduate diploma awarded by an autonomous institute, often AICTE-approved.
- MMS: a master's in management from a university, particularly common in Maharashtra.
What really matters
- Institute reputation, faculty and curriculum
- Verified placement outcomes (ask for the full report, not highlights)
- Approval and recognition for the purposes you need
- Total cost against realistic outcomes
When the label matters
Some government jobs, doctoral programmes and overseas applications ask for a degree or an equivalence certificate. In those cases check recognition before choosing a PGDM. For most private-sector roles, institute quality and your skills matter more than the label.
Admission differences
MBA and PGDM programmes often accept CAT, XAT, CMAT, MAT or GMAT. MMS in Maharashtra usually uses the state CET. Each institute publishes its own selection process.
